Zicam is a homeopathic over-the-counter nasal spray used to treat colds and flu. This drug contains zinc gluconate and it has been claimed, when administered nasally, it can cause anosmia — a condition where you lose total sense of smell and taste. In many cases, sufferers rarely regain their olfactory functions.
What are the dangers of anosmia? Not only does it affect your ability to enjoy food and in turn a negative influence on your nutrition, you could get into cooking-related accidents or expose yourself to a gas leak without knowing. Spoiled food and toxic substances cannot be detected either.
Manufactured by Matrixx Initiatives, Inc, Zicam has reportedly reaped enormous revenue totaling $13.4 million as of 2003. Victims of Zicam-related anosmia have filed law suits against this company.
