Sears kitchen stoves

Household goods giant Sears Holdings Corp. is settling a 2004 lawsuit against their freestanding or slide-in kitchen ranges.

It was reported that more than 100 people have been killed or injured from scalding and burns caused by hot foods and liquids spilling from the stove top, or from being crushed by the weight of a stove that toppled over.

Consumer groups blamed the lighter-gauge steel used in the manufacture of these stoves as the reason for these appliances to tip over more easily when weight was applied to the oven door.

Sears will install safety brackets on these stoves or offer gift cards in this estimated $500 million settlement. The deal covers Sears ranges sold from June 2000 to Sept. 18, 2007.

Consumers will have a choice of installing an anti-tip device for free, or getting a $50 gift card to help pay for a new, regularly priced stove from Sears, or receiving $100 if they had Sears or a third party install the appliance.

According to the settlement, the lawyers will share $17 million in fees.
