More baby bottle class actions on the way
Four Columbus-area parents are filing lawsuits against baby bottle manufacturers whose products contain the toxic chemical bisphenol A.
The class action is one of many lawsuits filed throughout America against baby-bottle manufacturers.
The chemical, also known as BPA, has been linked to brain damage and behavioral problems. BPA is also found in some brands of spill-resistant cups and sports bottles.
Studies have found that BPA, that makes the bottle shatterproof, can diffuse the plastic in to the liquids it contains, plus heating the bottle or cup speeds up this toxic process.
The couples, Staci Collier, Paige Engle and David and Kelly Johnson filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court against five manufacturers, claiming that they were aware BPA caused health problems but continued to use it to product their products and did not disclose the risks.
These Franklin County parents, sued Avent America of Bensenville, Ill.; Handi-Craft Co. of St. Louis, also known as Dr. Brown’s; Evenflo Co. of Vandalia; Gerber Products Co. of Parsippany, N.J.; and Playtex Products of Westport, Conn., on behalf of themselves and other class members who also bought baby bottles from these manufacturers.
