Menu Foods settles pet food class action
The Canadian-based company rocked headlines last year when its pet food sickened cats and dogs across North America. It has since recalled 60 million containers of melamine-tainted pet food.
Menu Foods announced this week that it would make a settlement. The terms of the agreement are not disclosed yet, as it is still subject to the approval of U.S. and Canadian courts.
A lawyer for Menu Foods, Amy W. Schulman said, βItβs a comprehensive settlement [that] would resolved all the claims.
The FDA found melamine in the imported wheat gluten in the pet products. Melamine is a substance used in manufacturing plastics. Affected pets suffered from kidney problems.
Following the recall β reportedly cost $53.8 million β in March last year, dozens of injury lawsuits were filed against Menu Foods and sought compensation for their veterinary bills.
Besides Menu Foods, other companies were also implicated in the lawsuit:
Del Monte Foods Inc., San Francisco
Nestle of Stamford, Connecticut
Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati
Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co. Ltd., Pixian, China
Suzhou Textile Import and Export Co., Jiangsu, China.
