Menu Foods pays out $24 million to pet owners in North America

PhotobucketOn April 1 this year, Menu Foods announced it will settle the class action lawsuit filed against them by pet owners across Canada and the U.S.

The group of companies involved in the melamine-tainted pet food that caused the deaths of thousands of cats and dogs have agreed to make a $24 million settlement.

The court papers have been filed in Camden, N.J. and a judge’s approval is still pending. The hearing is set on May 20, 2008.

According to a lawyer for the plaintiffs, Russell Paul said, “The settlement attempts to reimburse pet owners for all of their economic damages.”

House pets were not the only victims as the companies that had contaminated products also sold tainted feed to farms. It is estimated that millions of farm animals like chickens, pigs, and fish were affected.

In all, more than 150 brands and more than 5,000 products were hit by the recalls.
