Mattel
In August 2007, toy giant Mattel made two massive recalls on toys made from May 1 and August 2 that might have contained poisonous levels of lead. Among the over one million Chinese-made toys retracted were Sarge die-cast cars, Sesame Street characters, Dora the Explorer and other Fisher Price Inc. products.
Mattel announced that its Chinese manufacturer disregarded their quality standards and used lead paint from an unapproved third party vendor in South China. As a result, Mattel’s manufacturer Lee Der Industrial Co. was banned by Chinese government officials from exporting products. This was consequently followed by the suicide of one of its co-owners, Zhang Shuhong.
Lead, even in small quantities, are harmful to small children. If exposed to this harmful metal, they might suffer from brain damage and learning disabilities.
American parents are now reportedly suing Mattel over these contaminated toys. The class action suit seeks millions of dollars in damages, which include compensation for blood tests on the plaintiff’s children.
