Statins improve cholesterol levels by blocking out a particular enzyme that is essential in the production of cholestrol in the body.

In 2001, Bayer AG, Baycol’s manufacturer, reportedly recalled this drug from the US market because there were reports of people suffering from a severe muscle affliction called fatal rhabdomyolysis. Apparently, this side effect was seen in those who took Baycol in higher doses and when used together with lipid lowering drug, Gemfibrozil.

What is fatal rhabdomyolysis? It is a deteriorating condition where cells in the muscles break down and seep into the blood stream causing symptoms like nausea, vomiting, fever, dark urine, muscle pain, especially in the calves and lower back. In extremely rare incidences, the muscles can be so severely attacked that patients can face renal or other organ failure, which in turn can be fatal.
